The Arnhold Graduate Dance Education Program

Launched in Fall 2012, The Arnhold Graduate Dance Education Program (AGDEP) is designed for ambitious dance artists and educators looking for challenge, personal growth, and professional advancement. Our curriculum combines courses in the School of Education

and the School of Arts and Sciences dance program as well as dance education courses that focus on applying teaching methods to dance classroom environments. In addition to AGDEP's rigorous coursework, students are part of a supportive community of dance educators where academic work is enhanced through workshops, master classes, performances, and tech seminars.

Fostering Artistry

In addition to the academically rigorous coursework, AGDEP provides opportunities for its students to cultivate their unique artistic voices alongside their teaching practices. The AGDEP Salon Series allows students to showcase their creative work in professional performance studios throughout NYC in addition to the AGDEP Annual Performance, which takes place in Hunter College's historic Peggy Theater.

Cultivating Teaching Practices

Each AGDEP student will participate in a Student Teaching/Practicum, a culminating fieldwork experience. Teacher candidates are assigned to a cooperating teacher at a New York City public secondary school. They work full-time Monday through Friday for the entire school day under the guidance of their cooperating teacher. A partnership with Hunter’s Muse and Macauley Scholars Programs offers AGDEP students the opportunity to teach specialized dance workshops to undergraduates. Once employed as a dance educator with the NYCDOE, each graduate receives dance-specific resources and is paired with a NYS licensed dance educator/mentor, who provides personalized academic and professional support through the Arnhold Dance Teacher Support Program.

National Honor Society for Dance Arts

Hunter College is proud to house a collegiate chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts, the only national honor society for dance studies. As an NHSDA chapter, Hunter College is also an institutional member of the National Dance Education Organization and the New York State Dance Education Association.
