David Capps

David Capps’ choreography has appeared in New York at Danspace at St. Mark’s Church, Movement Research, the 92nd Street Y, Dixon Place, and La Mama, Inc., abroad in Italy, Costa Rica and Switzerland and nationally in many venues in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, and Massachusetts. He received the Colorado Federation of the Arts Innovation Award in 1994 and received commissions from California Polytechnic University, A Peak at the Arts Festival (Colorado) Musique des Lumieres (Switzerland), The Dance Experience (Switzerland), Toby Hankin, Polly Motley, MA Dance, the Boulder Ballet, Mary Wohl-Hahn, the University of Iowa, Sam Houston State University and the University of Kansas. He co-founded an outdoor performance series, Dancing in the Park, in upstate New York, and continues to present his work in the US and abroad.

He taught for 13 years at the University of Colorado/Boulder, and served as Director of Dance there for 5 years before returning to NYC to join the faculty at Hunter in 2006. Previously, he danced, taught and choreographed in New York City 1978-93, performing with a variety of choreographers, including David Gordon, Gus Solomons, Jr., Bertram Ross, Clarice Marshall, and, for ten years, Elise Long/Spoke the Hub Dancing, and taught at NYU School of the Arts and the University of Maryland.

He teaches an eclectic contemporary technique, improvisation, composition/choreography, choreographic analysis, somatics, and production, and thrives on finding ways to encourage student artists to find their personal potentials in making and responding to dance in its many forms.
