Admissions for the Advanced Certificate in Dance Education are NOW OPEN through March 15th, 2026!

 

The 28-credit post-masters Dance Education Advanced Certificate Program at Hunter College prepares candidates to teach dance in the PreK-12 school setting. Students will obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for teaching dance by examining pedagogical theories applicable to dance instruction, conduct action research, explore strategies for differentiation, develop age and content appropriate dance curriculum, familiarize with dance standards and authentic assessment in dance, and develop a lifelong reflective teaching practice in dance. This certificate serves dance professionals in the field who have an MA or MFA in dance, but lack the requirements for teaching certification.

Become certified to teach in NYS public schools preK-12 dance programs (upon successful completion of New York State exams).

Courses are offered in the morning, afternoon, and evening to address the needs of candidates working in a variety of teaching settings.

Gain pre-service classroom experience (fieldwork) in a New York City public school.

Admission Requirements:

Applications are reviewed yearly by a committee of AGDEP faculty, staff, and alumni. Applications for the Advanced Certificate in Dance Education are accepted each spring for a fall start. Applicants must have:

  1. An MFA in Dance from an accredited institution with a GPA of at least 3.0.

  2. An updated resume/CV.

  3. Unofficial transcripts from all universities attended. (Upon acceptance you will be required to submit official copies of all transcripts).

  4. Links to up to three clips of your creative work, between 5 and 15 minutes in total. These videos should include examples of both your professional creative/choreographic work as well as your dance performance work. 

    1. ​Please include a brief written synopsis for each video, describing the context of work piece and how to identify you if there is more than one performer.

  5. At least two letters of recommendation from appropriate academic or professional sources.

  6. A 500-word written statement outlining your interest in the program and future goals as they relate to Dance Education.

  7. An interview with AGDEP Director, Ana Nery Fragoso, held via Zoom.

How to Apply:

  1. Create an account on Slate.

  2. Select "School of Education" --> "Other Programs" --> “Dance Education, Adv. Cert.”

  3. Complete the online application, making sure to include the above items.

  4. In the Portfolio section of your application, upload your video(s) directly or share YouTube/Vimeo links (set to public, private, or unlisted). In the “description” box, include a short synopsis that explains the context of the piece, how to identify you if there are multiple performers, and any passwords/timestamps if relevant.
