maura nguyễn donohue, Chair of Dance, joined Hunter College Dance as an Assistant Professor in the Fall 2009 and was the Director of the MFA from 2021 - 2026.
maura has been making work and facilitating, curating, producing, and leading public conversations in the US, Asia, and Europe for over 30 years. From 99-04, as artistic advisor for Dance Theater Workshop’s Mekong Project, maura facilitated residencies for AAPI and SE Asian artists in the US, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. In 2026, with Anh Vo and Lumi Tan, maura co-curated "We Exist in the Ambivalence of those Motherfuckers" for Performance Space New York and co-edited the Movement Research Performance Journal #62 by the same name. Departing from the mainstream commemorations by Vietnam and the United States of the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, the programs and publication established new conversations about art-making and censorship in the contemporary landscape. donohue also co-created the podcast mini-series "Undoxx: Artists Untangle Censorship, with Yanira Castro, zavé martohardjono, Hope Mohr, and Maya Simone Z
maura was 1 of 12 choreographers included in Dance History(s): Imagination as a Form of Study, co-edited by thomas f. defrantz and Annie-B Parson. maura publishes through commissions from arts organizations such as MANCC, Danspace Project, DanceNYC and Gibney Dance, in academic presses such as Scholar & Feminist Online, Dance Studies Association, and Women and Performance, as well as at Culturebot. Ambivalent Selves: The Asian Female Body in American Concert Dance was published in Contemporary Directions in Asian American Dance and excerpts of When You’re Old Enough were in the original (1998) and the 25th anniversary (2023) edition of Watermark: Vietnamese American Poetry and Prose.
maura has been a member of La MaMa Experimental Theater Club's Great Jones Repertory Company since 1997, performing across the world in works by Andrei Serbhan, Ping Chong, Ivica Buljian, Motus, Dan Safer among others. She also works with multidisciplinary artists and is currently performing in works by Maya Ciarrocchi, devynn emory, and Pink Fang. She currently serves as program director for Creature Conserve's Performing Arts Fellowship, bringing performing artists from NYC and Rhode Island/SE Massachusetts with conservation scientists.
